Cultural Etiquette in Morocco: Do’s and Don’ts for Travelers
Morocco is known for its warm hospitality and deep-rooted traditions. Understanding basic etiquette
helps ensure a respectful and enjoyable visit. Here’s what you should know:

✅ Do :

  • Greet people respectfully with “Salam Alaikum” (Peace be upon you).
  • Dress modestly, especially in rural areas or religious sites—cover shoulders and knees.
  • Accept tea when offered—refusing might be seen as impolite.
  • Use your right hand when eating, greeting, or giving money.
  • Learn a few Arabic or French phrases—locals appreciate the effort.

❌ DON’T:

  • Take photos without asking, especially of people (especially women), military sites, or religious places.
  • Publicly display affection—kissing and hugging in public is frowned upon.
  • Enter mosques unless you’re Muslim (some like Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca are exceptions).
  • Show the soles of your feet or put feet on furniture—it’s seen as disrespectful.
  • Bargain too aggressively—haggling is expected, but keep it friendly.
  • Travel with cultural understanding and your experience will be richer.
